A heavy head isn't only about your head
By late afternoon, a dull heaviness settles in around your temples. Your eyes feel tired deep down, and the words on the screen stop sinking in. Even after you get into bed, your mind keeps turning things over. If you spend your working day surrounded by computers and smartphones, chances are at least one of these sounds familiar.
La HEAD, about a 3-minute walk from Shinjuku-nishiguchi Station, is a shop specializing in dry head spa treatments for people struggling with this kind of "brain fatigue." It held its grand opening in March 2026 and is run by Karada Works, a company that also operates gyms and osteopathic clinics.
What sets La HEAD apart is that it doesn't stop at "your head is tired, so we'll work on your head." It starts from the idea that the head, neck, shoulders and arms are not separate parts but connected as one body, so each treatment begins at the head and treats the neck, shoulders and arms as a single whole.
Six months in, what data from 454 customers showed
In September 2026, La HEAD published usage data on the 454 customers who visited in its first six months (March 5 to August 31). When customers were asked on arrival which parts of their body felt tired, the answers were as follows (multiple answers allowed).
| Tired area | Share |
|---|---|
| Head | 69% (312 people) |
| Neck | 65% (297 people) |
| Shoulders | 59% (266 people) |
| Face | 20% (93 people) |
| Arms | 11% (50 people) |
The head was the most common answer, but it was just 4 percentage points ahead of the neck. Among reasons for visiting, too, "relieving neck and shoulder stiffness" came first at 64%, ahead of "easing headaches and eye strain" (57%) and "wanting to relax" (57%). In other words, many people who come in for a head spa are actually carrying heavy necks and shoulders as well.
What's more, 418 of the 454 customers, or 92%, fell asleep during their treatment. Women made up 63% of customers and men 37%, so nearly 4 in 10 customers are men.
Note: These figures were compiled independently by La HEAD from its own customers and do not indicate general trends or medical effects.
A treatment developed with an osteopathic clinic
Since August 2026, La HEAD has offered a new treatment developed through a technical partnership with Nishi-Shinjuku 7-chome Seikotsuin, an osteopathic clinic about a 1-minute walk away. It draws on the clinic's knowledge of the body's structure and of how muscles and joints move, refining the way La HEAD loosens the head, neck, shoulders and arms as one connected whole.
The partnership goes beyond the treatment itself to staff training. New staff first learn about the structure of the body, including the neck, shoulders and arms, along with treatment techniques at Nishi-Shinjuku 7-chome Seikotsuin. They then train at La HEAD in head treatments, the techniques specific to dry head spa, and customer service. The aim is to narrow the gap in skill between therapists, so that you receive the same quality of treatment no matter who looks after you.
The tools and space behind the treatment
- Magnesium gel, also used by athletes, is combined with natural aromas and worked in with an original hand technique that reaches deep into the fascia.
- Warmed basalt stones relax the abdomen, and a warming eye mask releases tension around the eyes.
- Every room is fully private, in a space designed for quiet by craftspeople whose work also includes Important Cultural Properties.
- Therapists don't talk more than necessary during the treatment. If you'd like to chat, just let them know.
Courses and prices
There are four courses. Each can be booked for 60, 90 or 120 minutes, and first-time customers, as well as anyone returning within a month of their last visit, get ¥1,000 off (all prices include tax).
| Course | 60 min | 90 min | 120 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ¥8,800 | ¥12,600 | ¥16,400 |
| Signature | ¥10,300 | ¥14,100 | ¥17,900 |
| Cream Spa | ¥12,300 | ¥16,100 | ¥19,900 |
- Basic: The standard course, centered on the head and carefully loosening the neck, shoulders and arms as well.
- Signature: La HEAD's flagship course, working deeply with natural aromas, a warming eye mask and magnesium gel. This is the course recommended for first-time visitors.
- Cream Spa: Wraps the scalp in a rich cream, moisturizing it while guiding you into deep relaxation.
- In summer, the shop also offers the seasonal Cool Reset course, which uses a cooling cream.
After the Signature and Cream Spa courses, you can use a dedicated "refresh room." It has a shampoo station, high-quality hair dryers and hair irons, and styling products for both men and women, so even before work or another appointment, you can tidy yourself up and head straight out.
Two gifts for someone special
La HEAD's treatments can also be given as gifts, a way to turn wishes like "I hope you can shake off your everyday fatigue" or "take it easy for once" into time for someone's mind to rest. They are chosen as presents for birthdays and anniversaries, for family members and partners, and as a thank-you to people who have helped you at work.
There are two types, depending on how you want to give them.
| Item | Gift card | Invitation gift (prepaid) |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Handing over something tangible | Giving casually without a card, or giving to someone who lives far away |
| How to buy | In store, by email or via the official LINE account | By email or via the official LINE account |
| Payment | In store: cash, credit card or QR code payment. By email or LINE: bank transfer or online payment | Bank transfer or online payment |
| Delivery | Pick it up in store or have it mailed (it can also be sent directly to the recipient) | No need to visit the shop. You book the treatment for the recipient's preferred date and time |
| Recipient's booking | Book any date and time using the QR code on the back of the card | The booking is already confirmed. Just come in on the day |
- Both gifts are offered at each course's regular price (the first-visit discount does not apply).
- Invitation gifts cannot be cancelled on the day of the booking, and a same-day cancellation is charged at 100% of the price. Check the recipient's schedule before you book.
- If you're buying in store, staff may be busy with treatments and unable to help you, so it's a good idea to contact the shop in advance.
- If you can't decide which gift or course to choose, you can ask for advice via LINE or email.
Rather than only going for yourself, you can give "time to rest" to a hard-working colleague or family member. It's a fitting way to use a shop in Nishi-Shinjuku, a neighborhood full of busy working people.
Booking, and what to know before your first visit
Bookings are taken through the official website, Hot Pepper Beauty (a Japanese salon booking site) and by phone. Same-day bookings are possible if there's availability, but many time slots get busy, so booking early is recommended.
- The shop limits the number of people inside, so aim to arrive about 5 minutes before your booking time.
- Allow about 15 extra minutes on top of the treatment time for counseling and getting ready.
- Same-day cancellations are charged at 100% of the course price.
- You can have the treatment with your makeup on (though work around the face may smudge it).
- If possible, come without styling products, so your hair is less likely to snag.
- There is also an English website and booking page, so visitors from overseas can book in English.
For working people
A head spa may sound like a "relaxing treat." But La HEAD's data shows that many of the people who come here are dealing with problems directly tied to their everyday work: stiff necks and shoulders, tired eyes and shallow sleep.
Instead of waiting until you've hit your limit to rest, you make time between one piece of work and the next to empty out your head and body for a while. For people who work in Nishi-Shinjuku, it's fair to say there's now one more way to do just that.
